Ringtones: What's yours and how often do you change it?
Submitted by enrico.
I did have Teardrop by Massive Attack but changed this week to Thnks Fr Th Mmrs by Fall Out Boy. I used to change ring tones as often as I change my hair (which is quite often) but when I got the Sidekick I discovered I could no longer make my own ring tones and since they cost $2.49 each, I rarely change it. I find something seriously wrong with charging more for the ring tone than the song. A full length song is around $0.99 whereas a sampling of that song (and the sample is usually not even the part you want) as a ring tone is more than $2. That is just insane. If I already own the song I should be able to make a ring tone for it. Completely retarded. Of course, the whole media industry is screwed up and the more they try to be old school the more they will lose, but that is an entirely different rant altogether.
For a full sit-down dinner with several guests, would you rather be the one cooking or do you prefer to just show up and eat?
I like to be the one cooking, not necessarily because I am a good cook, mostly because I like to entertain. I like all of the work that goes into having people over. I like to plan the menu, make the food, organize fun beverages, plan the entertainment, decorate...all that stuff.
I enjoy the party from the hostess standpoint the most. I get a real kick out of serving guests tasty dishes, fun drinks, and making sure everyone has a good time. I love the feeling I get after a successful party. Perhaps if I wasn't in technology, I would be in a career along those lines.
I don't like to attend parties where I am a guest nearly as much. I am not comfortable being waited on and having nothing to do but relax.I find doing all the work is more relaxing for me than just hanging out.
In honor of World Teachers' Day today, tell us about a teacher who had a positive impact on your life.
I attended a small private school all the way through eighth grade. On average, we had 17 people in my entire grade at any one time and my eighth grade graduating class has five girls including me. I experienced culture shock when I moved on to high school. I moved on to a public school with a freshman class of over 400. Signing up for elective courses with the counselor was a challenge. I didn't want to take typing and the counselor frowned on that telling me as a girl I needed typing skills for secretary and receptionist jobs. That really wasn't where I was hoping my career would go. I wanted to take shop and welding and learn to build things. I ended up settling for History of the Western Theater as an intro to the theater track because it sounded better than typing.
Mrs. Tucker was in charge of theater as well as our teacher and what I thought would be a boring class turned out to be an excellent one. Most people in the class were the typical "theater types" and I had a blast with them. Ms. Tucker was a very strong person and I enjoyed the course so much I requested to be accepted into Stagecraft my sophomore year. Two of us were accepted and broke the standards of Stagecraft as it was a junior/senior only course. I really loved Stagecraft as I got to work behind the scenes.
I learned how to apply stage makeup, build sets from wood, Styrofoam and chicken wire. I learned the ins and outs of sound and lighting and got to explore the top of the theater on the cat walks.I had so much fun I joined the local city theater and did sound and lights there too.
Mrs. Tucker expanded my horizons and defended those in her care. She knew us and pushed us and guided us without cramping our teenage style. She was close enough to remain that needed adult and teacher, but gave us enough space to explore and learn on our own that we didn't feel smothered by her.
The thing I will never, ever forget is what she said to me after I was out of her classes... she told me that I was strong, and that I didn't "need" a man to make it in life, but it was ok to "want" one. That one thing has stayed with me my entire life and always will. It is hard to find a balance sometimes between being overly dependent on or pushing away our friends and partners. Mrs. Tucker's wisdom grounds me whenever I need balance. I wonder if she knows that she was helped me become the person I am.
What one year of your life would you like to re-live, if you were given the chance?
Submitted by Ross.
When I first read this question I had a few incidents fly through my mind that I would like to handle differently. Hindsight you know? But I can't really do that because each incident affects who you are on such a grand scale I am not willing to risk things on modifying them. To relive a whole year, wow, that is just too much. What if I screwed stuff up so bad I didn't get one of my children? Know matter the mistakes I have made or the hardships I have faced, I am not willing to risk my children on the chance to go back.
On the bright side of the question, I suppose I might consider reliving a marvelous year just to get a chance to have a marvelous year again? The only problem there is I can't narrow it down to just ONE year. I need a few. I would love to be able to spend more time with each of my children from birth to now and in the future. Maybe I don't even want to relive things... even good things can be changed. Did you ever see the Adam Sandler movie, "Click", I think was the name of it? Bad news came from that remote. Bad news. Left him with nothing but regrets.
Can I just have a clone of myself? I can send the clone off to work and out to do icky chores and spend more time just loving on my kids. That would be awesome.
What small act of kindness have you done in the last thirty days?

Grandad was recently diagnosed with throat cancer. It is not life threatening yet as it hasn't spread but he had two options for treatment: 1) radiation/chemo which has a 70% chance success rate alone but will destroy his saliva glands (and temporarily his taste buds) or 2) surgery to remove the tumor immediately but the procedure will take his voice box. He has opted for the radiation/chemo combo in an attempt to save his voice. This was a difficult choice for a man who loves to eat and has his own garden and fresh herbs and a man that loves to talk. In the meantime he has a feeding tube because his throat hurts too bad to swallow and he doesn't like to take the morphine because it makes him nauseous.
I love my Grandad dearly and he lives on a farm about an hour away with my Grandmama. They are having a hard time keeping all the farm chores up with the illness and all right now so I packed up the kids the other day and we headed down for a visit. The kids did the weed eating, the garden picking, the hauling, and any other chore they could come up with. They had a blast. It's funny how kids love to do chores for other people, but not their own. =)
Anyway, we decided we would go down every other Saturday to help out as well as just to visit. I hope that if nothing else, the visits will put a little cheer into a dreary time and help take their minds off the illness and discomfort. You can't help but smile when a curly headed two year old girl wraps her arms around your leg in a hug and looks up with a smile to tell you "Love you, Grandad"...
Clowns: delightful or terrifying?
Downright frightening. Look at all the examples of scary clowns:
The clown from Poltergeist, um hello? I refused to get off the bed near the edge after that.
Killer Klowns from Outer Space anyone?
Adam the Clown from Dead Rising as a video game example...
And in case you want more, a search on YouTube for "scary clowns" returned 579 results.
Do you have a pet? What kind of pet do you own, and why did you choose it?
Submitted by Brendz.
We currently have two cats and one fish.
We have had Bob the cat for about 7 years. Bob is an inside cat only and is orange with long hair. My second cousin found him under her car at work when he was just 3-4 months old. Her cat didn't get along with him so we adopted him. He was all feet and ears and pretty sad looking but with care and a little love and spoiling he has become quite a pretty cat. He is the most independent cat we have and if he wants loving he will let you know otherwise he is a "please leave me alone" cat.
Kitty is our newest cat. He is a short hair orange cat and spends most of his time outside. We brought him with us when we moved and officially adopted him. Prior to that we fed him but assumed he belonged to someone else until we ventured back to our old home a month later and found him matted, bloody from fights, and starving. We certainly couldn't leave him like that so we loaded him up and brought him home. He still isn't liking the litter box so he doesn't stay inside all the time. He is very sweet and cuddly and won't fight back in a cat fight.
Our final pet is our fishy. He is a goldfish we have had for almost a year now. We actually bought four fish - one for each kid - but three died from Ick. We managed to nurse the last one back to health and he is doing great.
The kids would like a dog and so would we but since we are gone 10-12 hours per day, I don't think it would be fair to a dog to leave them like that. Maybe someday.
